Sandra Janoff, 2025 ODC Distinguished Scholar, and Michael Donnelly understand that educators are now teaching in environments shaped by heightened complexity, polarization, and uncertainty. Confidence in expert-driven answers has diminished and no single role or organization can define the way forward.
In this context, the challenge is not only how to lead or facilitate whole-system change, but how to teach others to do it. This workshop centers on Whole-System Development as a teaching challenge: how consultants and educators help people build the capacity to work across boundaries, engage difference productively, and take shared responsibility for improving their own systems over time. Participants engage in a structured learning experience built around a realistic, cross-boundary challenge. Through reflection and dialogue, they explore how to make design choices, who is involved, what questions are asked, how differences are surfaced, and how shared purpose is articulated, so they can shape what becomes possible.
The workshop draws on experiential and adult learning traditions. This is not a Future Search training or a method-focused session. Whole-System Development is presented as a way of thinking about change that prioritizes creating the right conditions for the discovery of shared purposes while continuing to hold differences. . Participants leave with clearer language for teaching whole-system change and practical ideas they can adapt for their own teaching and consulting contexts.
